Risks

What can go wrong, including with the guard switched on.

Perpetual futures are leveraged. You can lose more than the margin you put in a single position, and you can lose all the funds in a margin pool. Bulwark is software: it gives no investment advice and holds no funds.

The guard can fail to protect you

  • Gaps. A price can move past every stage before any order fills, especially when a stock's home market reopens or news lands while liquidity is thin.
  • Fill prices. Guard orders are limited to your slippage setting. In a fast market they may fill only partly or not at all, and a filled trim still realises a loss.
  • Latency and outages. The guard can be late because of network delays, a slow or unavailable Hyperliquid API, congestion during a cascade, or Bulwark's own servers being down. The resting backstop stops on Hyperliquid help in the last case only if they were placed before the outage.
  • Holding off. When prices or account data are stale, the guard deliberately does nothing rather than act on bad data.
  • Your settings. The guard does what your rules say. Lines close to liquidation, small top-ups or no stages at all may protect little. Use the simulator to see what your rules do.
  • Survival is not safety. Avoiding the liquidation event can still leave you with a small fraction of your equity, as the silver replay shows.

Market and platform risks

  • HIP-3 markets are run by their deployer (trade.xyz) on Hyperliquid, with their own oracles, trading hours, halts and rules. Read trade.xyz's perpetuals risks and disclaimers.
  • Mark price drives liquidations and the guard. An oracle error or a bad print that moves the mark can trigger both.
  • Hyperliquid itself can halt, change its rules, or suffer an incident. Bulwark cannot protect against that.

Key and software risks

  • Guard key custody. Your guard key is held in AWS KMS and cannot be copied, but a compromise of Bulwark's signing service could let someone have it sign trades on your account while they controlled the service (not withdrawals). Keys created before KMS was switched on are encrypted keys on Bulwark's server, which could be copied in such a compromise. See Key storage.
  • Trading key. The optional browser trading key can trade for anyone with access to your browser profile.
  • Software errors. Despite tests and the checks before every signature, the guard could contain a bug.
  • The AI translator can misread a sentence. Nothing applies until you have read the exact rule and signed it.

Availability and law

Bulwark is not available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Russia, Belarus, or sanctioned regions; in the EU the automatic guard is off (Regions). You are responsible for using it lawfully where you are.

Testnet preview

The current preview runs on Hyperliquid testnet, where liquidity and prices differ from mainnet.
